In the Incarnations universe\framework, humans live a cross between a highly technological society and an advanced magical society. Most of the humans are able to practice magic, but usually the most powerful magic comes at the cost of going to Hell. The exception seems to be the Incarnations themselves, as they can either go to heaven or hell at the end of their tenures. (see On a Pale Horse).
